The Neverending Pursuit of Happinness

More Than Just a Constitutional Right

The pursuit of happiness is a fundamental right outlined in the Constitution of the United States. Specifically, it is mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, which states that:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

This statement asserts that the pursuit of happiness is not just a privilege but a right that all individuals are entitled to. It’s a shame that people seem to spend more time talking about the Second Amendment than the pursuit of happiness; it’s like they’re more worried about protecting their guns than protecting their own well-being.

Philosophers, scientists, and regular people have thought about what happiness is and how to get it for hundreds of years. Even in storytelling, the hero’s journey, a narrative structure popularized by Joseph Campbell, is a common trope in literature and film. It’s a story of a hero who embarks on a journey, facing various challenges and obstacles, before ultimately achieving a great victory or transformation.

In many ways, the hero’s journey is a parallel to the pursuit of happiness. Just like the hero, we all face our own set of challenges and obstacles in our quest for happiness. As we face and overcome obstacles, we learn and grow as individuals; we get stronger and wiser, and we learn more about ourselves and the world around us. This journey of self-discovery and growth can ultimately lead to a greater sense of happiness and fulfillment.

In “The Pursuit of Happyness” (mispelled on purpose), the film starring Will Smith as Chris Gardner, a struggling salesman who becomes homeless with his young son, is based on the true story of Gardner, who went from living on the streets to becoming a successful entrepreneur.

In a desperate attempt to improve his situation, Chris lands an unpaid internship at a stock brokerage firm (emphasis on "unpaid”). He works tirelessly to learn the ropes and prove himself, all while juggling the demands of being a single parent. Even though it was monumentally hard, Chris eventually got the job at the firm and went on to become a successful stockbroker (and Will Smith filmed some of the most memorable and motivational films ever).

The film is a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the human spirit, and Will Smith’s portrayal of Chris Gardner is nothing short of brilliant. The movie not only shows the struggles but also the triumphs of Chris Gardner, it’s a heartwarming and inspiring story that will have you rooting for the protagonist throughout the movie.

Gardner’s pursuit of happiness didn’t end with the movie's closing credits, though. He continued to be a successful businessman, philanthropist, and motivational speaker. He continues to inspire others with his story of overcoming adversity and achieving success.

Happiness is not something that can be achieved like a goal or an objective; it is a way of life. Happiness is not a destination, but a journey. It is not achieved by checking off items on a checklist, but rather through an ongoing process of self-discovery and growth. It’s about finding meaning and purpose in our lives, connecting with others, cultivating a positive mindset, living in the present moment, and being grateful for it.
